Now we know how and why this President signed a directive granting extraordinary powers to the office of the president in the event of a declared national emergency, apparently without congressional approval or oversight.
The "National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive" was signed May 9, by executive order.
This is just one way President Bush has gotten his way, just as we were told by Senator Leahy that "In fact, we were about to issue subpoenas then and one of the senators came to our meeting and said that the vice president had met with the Republican senators and told them they were not allowed to issue subpoenas.
Remember President Bush already has an executive order that allows him to confiscate property of anyone who commits acts of violence threatening the peace and stability of Iraq and undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.
President Bush has entrusted himself with leading the entire federal government, not just the Executive Branch. And he gives himself the responsibility for ensuring constitutional government. With rumors of war with Iran and talks of terrorist attacks again in America. If a catastrophic emergency occurs during Bush's watch, he's in charge for as long as he wish. Is that called being a dictator?
What say you?

I say IMPEACH quit stalling congress people - throw the book at em and the Constitution too. Do your freaking jobs. Give us back our Bill of Rights. Review every single excutive order and do it NOW. Forget party politics, forget political outcomes. Keep it simple and get back to basics , use the tools the Founders gave us. Go over each and every aspect of the Patriot Act and stop our dissent into fascism - NOW and after that do some serious electoral process reform. Dammit.
Jermome Corsi said, "This is the most broad definition of emmergency powers that I've ever seen a president award to themselves, and it really is virtually dictatorial powers the ability to take over and manage all levels of government, including private sector organizations. And the directives have no indication that to get these powers the president has to go through Congress"
He called the White House, Tony Snow's office, and they declined to comment!
Emergeny powers... Our Decider wants to become the Emperor of the United States.
Brian lamb points out a page 12 article in the Washington Post, "Bush Changes Continuity Plan... the rest of the media has not addressed this, doesn't seem to care about it.. Why are you so upset and they're not?"
And Jerome Corsi says, "Well I think Brian you just hit on reasons why CSPAN is watched by an increasing number of people.. the main stream media does not seem to be covering the issues which are of deep concern to the American people.."
Dictatorial Powers for President? Seems so!
"The idea that the president could redefine a national emergency to be completely within his own authority is fairly frightening.."
And this is coming from a man who wanted to run against John Kerry.
So the question is, what are our congress men and women doing about this?! I am so disappointed with the Democrats in Congress right now. They're spineless and don't even seem to be all that intelligent.
Excellent post Let's Talk! Thank you! I've always loved watching C-SPAN. And so few people bother to watch it... sigh...
I am pretty disappointed with congress too, I have to wonder if they would do anything when Bush uses some emergency to stay in power. They might raise a fuss when he abolishes congress or the senate. They need those paychecks.
So in the event of a "national emergency" the first thing the government is going to have to deal with is a constitutional crisis.
Great, like I needed to feel even less safe.
Doesn't this look familiar:
The interests behind the Bush Administration, such as the CFR, the Trilateral Commission – founded by Brzezinski for David Rockefeller – and the Bilderberg Group have prepared for and are now moving to implement open world dictatorship within the next five years." -
Dr. Johannes Koeppl – former official of the German Ministry for Defense and adviser to NATO.
Why isn't this being reported in the MSM?!
Why isn't Congress doing anything about this?!!
Somebody, anybody -- stop this madness!
All it will take is one false-flag terrorist attack, or the beginning of the Iran War - then watch out for the calls and howls to grant Bush an "exceptional" third term, using Roosevelt and WWII as precedents ...
"We've always been at war with ..."
All we need is another homegrown "turrist" attack, or an excuse to attack Iran -- and all the mechanisms will be in place. Bush will have to stay in the White House for another term "for the good of the country."
Who Hijacked Our Country
I'm glad this is getting more play. Couple it with Bush's recent July 17, 2007 Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq and Bush has a recipe to declare himself dictator.
proundprogressive I agree with you on the impeachment and the electoral process, which doesn't work.
thankwee-anajo, welcome to Let's Talk and I hope this is the first of many visits. I love C-span a watch it as much as possible and I to am disappointed with the Democrats in Congress. Thanks for the kind words.
Hi parson, I feel as you do about this congress and I think it's scary, that this President has an option to maybe stay in office due to his dictatorship and a national emergency.
1138 you hit it right on the head, a constitutional crisis. That just might be what we will see next year before the next elections.
I think we are all asking why Lizzy. That seems to be all we can do because congress doesn't hear us or they are trying hard not to pay us any attention and the MSM reports what they want and as if we all are blind to the facts.
Yes Larry, world dictatorship is part of the Bush doctrine. To rule and spread his democracy
Mentarch, I think that you are so right in your assumption.
Tom Harper for the good of the country is just what this man might call it, if we attack Iran or if terrorist attack us again.
Polishifter It needs as much play as possible, to inform as many people as possible. Thanks for the reference.
