GONZO-GATE

See Original Story

A group of House Democrats will introduce a resolution calling on the Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) will sponsor the measure. It will be dropped in the hopper tomorrow. Finally a bold move by a Congressman to stop this nightmare of lies that has filled the halls of our House and Senate.

Here's the text of resolution...

RESOLUTION
Directing the Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether Alberto R. Gonzales, Attorney General of the United States, should be impeached for high crimes and
misdemeanors.
1 Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary shall
2 investigate fully whether sufficient grounds exist for the
3 House of Representatives to impeach Alberto R. Gonzales,
4 Attorney General of the United States, for high crimes
5 and misdemeanors.

There's also the Four Senate Democrats who have asked for a special counsel to determine whether Gonzales was truthful when he testified about a warrantless domestic spying program and the dismissals of nine U.S. attorneys

Solicitor General Paul D. Clement who clerked for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court has been asked to handle the criminal contempt citations.

Committee chairman, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. and the panel's top Republican, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania did not sign the letter. Leahy has given Gonzales until Friday to correct or clarify his testimony. Specter said a perjury investigation is premature.

Attorney General Gonzales looks as though he might be gone within a few weeks because he has the following awaiting his statement Friday about his testimony:

1. Possible appointment of a special prosecutor to handle the criminal contempt
citations.

2. Possible switch to civil contempt proceedings.

3. Impeachment, or inherent contempt proceedings.

What say You?

I would be very suprised if the Republican's didn't stop it. They are more interested in keeping with party lines than doing the right thing.

I guess we shall find out about this call by the Democrats. We will know if they are just blowing smoke and we will know if the Republicans are really just about keeping this President and his Administration out of harms way.

If Sen. Leahy do not sign the letter by the four Congressman then Solicitor General Clement can use that as an excuse not to do anything about Gonzales.

I know the house and the Judiciary Committee would vote by party line and the Democrats would take things from there.

As from that, we shall see what we shall see...maybe Gonzales will resign.

I think it's great that someone is finally calling this Bastard out on his lies, and while he does deserve a punishment, I would rather see Shrub impeached! Ultimately he is the one who started and allowed this B.S. to continue. However like I said before I welcome justice being served either way it comes!

I say Impeach them all, forget the political calculus. Use the tools the founders gave us, let the chips fall where they may. Put principles over both parties. All who refuse not to do this investigation and hearings , fail their primary Oath to Uphold OUR constitution. Like they say in the 12 step programs..It only works IF you work it. We have the tools to reel in a corrupt , over reaching, tryanical excutive. WE need to use them. The Patriot Act is a travesty - making us all suspects. We are a breath away from Martial Law. I could go on and on.

Our congress is as corrupt as Rome's before that over reaching empire sank - history will treat us the same way. We are NOT a super power, when our finances are so precarious..so its time to really clean house. Or we will decline, and faster then we think. And all the propaganda to the contrary will not ring true for the masses. The Military will turn as well..like dominoes..the illusions will fall away.

This is a good first step. Lets see if the fat cats of both sides really follow through.

As in all paper acts the Democrats have done since assuming power, I'll believe it when they take it to the end.

FunkyTown Fighter, I really hope they will come him out and not let things fall through.

I agree proudprogressive, lets see if the fat cats of both sides really follow through.

I'm right with you larr, I'll believe it when they take it to the end as well.

I think Gonzo will resign or be impeached. He is making the GOP and DOJ look bad... they can't afford it this late in the game with the '08 elections just around the corner.

LET'S TALK said...

I hope you are right Q, and yes I agree, he has to resign.

I think that next time he shows up at the capitol that the capitol police should place him under arrest.
Then he should be held until there is a final disposition of his crimes against the nation.

"Electrode Al" is just too damned arrogant about his crimes. That arrogance, of course, comes from being borderline retarded.

He's going to have to be clipped. No other way makes any sense.

LET'S TALK said...

1138, I wish the capitol police could place him under arrest.

JollyRoger, I just hope Congress does something this time.

1138, maybe if Gonzales is arrested they will hold him indefinitely, without any charges, and not allow him to contact his family at all. Let him know how it feels.

I think Parson is correct here, the GOP will stick by Bush pretty much regardless. They seem to be without principles in the matter.

Like Funkytown says, I'd rather see Bush impeached, but hey, Gonzales makes a good first domino, eh? I think that if he had to face some kind of trial and answer questions under oath, he might indicate some wrongdoing on the part of Bush and Cheney and it could lead to some pretty heavy stuff... but then again, hasn't he already lied under oath and pretty much gotten away with it? Damn, so that won't work...

The Dems really don't know how to spin. At least if they do, the media doesn't give them enough coverage for it to make a difference in the court of public opinion. The GOP, seemingly down or on the ropes, continues to frame and control the debate, because the Dems let them do it. The Dems can knock them down, and every time it looks like a knockout, the Republicans get up on an eight or nine count and keep fighting. They are like Ahnold in the "Terminator" movies... they just keep coming back, even when it seems like they shouldn't be able to. It's enough to make one think the fight is rigged, eh? Just maybe?

He'll resign before he'll suffer the humiliation of impeachment.

LET'S TALK said...

Snave, I think the Democrats know that if they make a way for victory in the House, the Senate which most times need 60 votes to pass anything is just not there.

kip152, I'm hoping that he resigns because the Senate has the say on impeachment and if the votes are not there, then this guy walks unless he's giving a special council to investigate the lies he has told.

Tom Harper said...

Republicans will continue with their usual gimmick: They'll make public statements condemning Gonzales and distancing themselves from the Bush Administration. And then when they vote they'll all circle the wagons and vote to keep protecting Gonzales and keep stabbing voters in the back.

It must be nice for Gonzo knowing that he can just say and do whatever he wants, be proven at best incompetent and at worst a partisan criminal, and still know that his job is safe.

I think it is still a toss up as to whether Gonzoles will stay or go. The Bush creatures are becoming more dangerously bold with every passing day. They simply don't care about the rule of law or what the American people think. They are banking on most Americans NOT thinking.

Gonzoles, unqualified from the beginning, was chosen to advance the Bush agenda - not to uphold American justice. I don't see Bush giving up one inch of the ground that he has taken. I hope that Congress will do something but I am not holding my breath. We need to rally more Americans to the streets and stop this administration ourselves.

LET'S TALK said...

I really like the opinion you have in this comment Kitchen Window Woman. I agree with you very much and hope that we can do something to stop this President.

As you said, he's getting very bold and really do not care what we think or say... he's going to run and have things his way.

It's about time they impeach someone from this corrupt administration! Frankly, I think the whole lot of them belong in prison.

LET'S TALK said...

They really need to impeach Gonzo!

If we are out to clean things up, I think Gonzales is a good starting point. I think it would be good for Congress to be able to claim the accomplishment of exposing the lies and corruption around Gonzales and getting him to resign. Whether or not Dumbya would give Gonzales a full pardon or whatever might not matter as much as the fact that through the actions of Congress, the nation wouldn't have to suffer any longer with an AG who has no respect for the law.

Rich Lowry's latest column in our local newspaper was revolting... he used the tag line "Those who can't legislate, investigate." That's the kind of crap that gets press and sinks movements in our country nowadays. Well, I have to say, it seems like the Democrats in Congress are trying to legislate, and their road is effectively blocked by the GOP at nearly every turn. It seems logical that if you are unable to do that which the people elected you to do, you look to find out why things aren't working. I am all for investigations of Gonzales, and anyone else the left thinks it has the goods on at this time. The Dems just need to keep things turned up a notch, legistlating and investigating with equal vigor.

LET'S TALK said...

I really don't understand what this Congress is waiting on with Gonzo...if they can't impeach him, at least try.
