Four years ago our President declared "major combat operations" in Iraq were over, yesterday President Bush vetoed a bill that calls for the start of a withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.
President Bush's Administration have already started their talking points-- saying the Democrats will be to blame for any hardships suffered by U.S. troops and their families.
Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid addressed the media yesterday in respond to President Bush's veto.
Congress appropriated more than $100 billion to support our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It would seem that it's now up to this President to explain to the American people why he would veto the appropriation.

We shall find out very soon-- plus the Republicans will need to think about 08 and what all this means to them.
Congress controls the purse strings. Bush can veto bills 'til he's blue in the face, but he can't tell Congress which laws to pass or how much money to provide.
This is the chance for Congress to grow some spines and simply refuse to appropriate any more funding for this Iraqi madness. They need to provide the exact amount of funding for the soldiers who are there now, and the exact amount required to bring them home.

It appears Pelosi and Reid are cooking up a "benchmarks" plan for the purposes of veto resistance.
Benchmarks and timetables amount to the same thing, since we know there's no way in hell anything is going to improve in Iraq. Reluctant Republicans might well sign onto a benchmark bill, which would make it that much harder to sustain a veto. t's certainly an alternative worth exploring.
tom: I think the congress has no other choice but to give "the commander guy" his wish since the House failed to get the two-thirds majority necessary to override the veto.
There will be some type of benchmarks watered down by the Republicans but dont rule out a (small funding bill), that will allow the Dems. to battle on with this President and his veto.
jollyroger: The Republicans will try to get the Dems. to water down the benchmarks before they reach the President. That's there only hope unless the Dems. come up with a small funding bill for the troops so they can continue this battle with "the commander guy"
I think Congress has the spine they just don't have enough support to shut this DICTATOR down! We need to Impeach and quick before 3,000 more innocent lives get taken!

Yes Lizzy, jollyroger makes a good point, but we know that congress needs a 2/3 vote to over-ride the veto and we just did not get it.
We cant charge the Dems. when the voters needed to have taken care of this problem during the last election.
We must look to a better way to get this President to do the right thing or a better way to get the job done.
Someone needs to take away his privileges and send him to bed without any supper... act like a child- get treated like one.

You are right Women on the Verge, but kids dont have death on their hands.
I think we'll end up seeing some bill that either has benchmarks (which can probably be bypassed later if they aren't reached) or perhaps a limited time funding bill (just delaying the showdown). Polls do show that the public is against the war, but I haven't seen ones that say they want the troops de-funded. Something will get done, because neither wants to be the scapegoat.
I concur Political Realm, some type of benchmark or funding bill might be presented.
