El Cenizo, Texas And The Immigration Bill

Welcome to El Cenizo, Texas USA, a border town where Spanish is the official language and nobody bothers illegal immigrants.

In May, 2006, El Cenizo, with a population of 6500 people, became a Spanish speaking town. In 2000, the population was 80.73% White, 0.28% African American, 1.07% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 14.67% from other races, and 3.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 98.90% of the population.

Today our Senate refused to close debate and advance the legislation, thereby defeating President Bush's plan to overhaul immigration laws.

America has to look at the fact that our agriculture States depend on Mexican workers, therefore America depends on Mexican workers.

I am not judging which position is correct on this issue, there is enough of that going on around this country already.

When you look at El Cenizo, what comes to your mind and does it bother anyone that this Texas city is a Spanish speaking city in America?

Here's a video to put a laugh into the post

Perhaps if Corporate America were punished for bringing in illegals, then those jobs that people supposedly won't do, will be filled by unemployed Americans.

Doesn't the law already reqire this?

larry, there's a lot of jobs that Americans just aren't doing now days. Such jobs are found in Agriculture. There's not too many American that are doing tose types of jobs.

nope, doesn't bother me at all that there's a town of people who speak primarily spanish. since we don't have a national language, who cares? of course, i grew up in texas and started learning spanish in third grade and thought it was all quite cool.

I'm somewhat with you on this one ender, I'll never end up in that neck of the woods.

If I am, my French wouldn't help out... I took French in High School and College.

I hate to be the dissenter, but somebody's got to be :)

1.) The Americans "aren't doing" the jobs because we don't live 25 to a 5 room house and have laws protecting us from things like slave conditions and chemical exposures. If the illegal immigration was stopped, eventually the market would have to pay enough to get Americans interested in doing the hjobs. In addition, farmers here would be forced to do what they had to do in places like Australia decades ago-automate AND adopt safe practices for chemical dispersion.

We're doing the illegals no favors. Many of them are going to suffer and die because of the exposures they're getting from working in those fields. We must start punishing the people who use and dispose of illegal laborers harshly.

jollyroger, I really don't have the answers to this problem.

You make a very good point about the working conditions and the farmerss cleaning up it's act.

I agree, I've tried not to say much and would like to get the input of others on this matter.

Yes, it's the corporate boys who are causing this problem.

I agree with Jolly. I travel all over the country for my job, and see people on the unemployment lines, while the illegals I see are being bussed in to a factory on a day shift, work, driven back to homes that a dozen or more live in, while other people who work at the same place, get stuck on night, have tp provide their own transportation and must provide
their own housing.

I see this in every state I am in every week.

OK Q, I'm not going to argue with you on this one.

Wow Larry I never knew that. I was living in California in the earlie 80's and saw Mexicans working in the fields but never knew that this was what was going on.

Interesting portrait of that town. I've been to some border towns in Texas in California that are just like that; you'd swear you were in Mexico. Whether it's "right" or not, communities like this are never mentioned in all the furious mudslinging over the immigration issue.

Funny video.

I lived in Texas from 3rd grade until half way through my sophomore year in High School.
A town using Spanish as it's primary language doesn't bother me particularly it reflects the needs of the community.
There are other communities (Amish) in America that use German as the official language, we don't get bent about that.
Are they teaching American values and History? Yes
That's all I care about.

Xenophobia is not pretty and the "Mexican" debate is filled with it.

I really do not know where I stand with this, I believe that everyone has a right to live a good, peaceful, happy life.

Its another thing when we have those that come here on visa's and over stay because of the very good pay and very good jobs that they have that is just wrong.

For a long time India had a pouring of their countryman in America doing jobs that they say we did not qualify for.

Now with the outsourcing, a lot of them are headed back home.

I think its wrong when people enter this country illegally, regardless to whom they are.

It's a mess because as you stated and I agree, how can you deport a family where the child is a American citizen?

I know that there is a lot of border towns where most folks speak Spanish and there is a lot of communities where different language is spoken.

My point is, if you are here then at least try to conform to the language here.

It bothers me that Americans can get away with hiring illegals and often with paying them below minimum wage. It just represents a very cheap labor source... no need to pay them benefits or look after them, just give them a little bit of money to do the work, so your payroll won't have to pay minimum wage and/or give benefits. I wonder how many corporations who see greater profits through the hiring of illegal workers will also not pay their corporate taxes this year.

This is probably naive thinking, but maybe not, because it's along the same lines of what JollyRoger is saying! I think that if there weren't as many illegal aliens doing "less desireable jobs" for dirt cheap, and if employers were required to give better pay and benefits, more Americans might take those jobs. If McDonald's paid its cooks and servers something like $10 to $12 an hour and gave them some nice medical benefits I think more Americans would want those jobs. It's sad that so many of us now think we are above having to do certain kinds of work that is necessary to keep things moving in society. What caused that way of thinking to become part of our society's way of looking at work?

I would like to see legislation proposed that would not be difficult to implement, that would make America stronger in terms of jobs for all, that would reflect the needs of humans, and that would look at the big picture in terms of both American and Mexican lives instead of in terms of dollars. That is probably too much to ask for, I guess.

snave, corporate taxes are rarely paid by big companies, there is too many loop holes to get around paying such things.

Everything about illegals working for little of nothing fall on our government not doing their job and mandating these companies to make a safe inviroment for folks to work and update equipment to fit the job and pay everyone a salary that would not induce raiseing the price of their product to consumers.
